Happy February! It’s the month for celebrating that holiday known as Valentine’s Day, so I will take this opportunity to introduce you all to the newest love in my life (Carmen and Penny have been asking me for an announcement, so here goes)… please meet Brock Alexander. Brock was born on November 3rd, 2014, and has been hard at work making sure his mom functions well on minimal sleep and maximum sugar (2:00 am calls for chocolate).

CALL FOR SPONSORSHIP – Canada Region AAPG Imperial Barrel Award

The eighth annual Canada Region AAPG Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) competition will be held in Calgary on March 27, 2015. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate geoscientists from universities across Canada to gain experience evaluating real world oil and gas exploration plays. Students will:

  1. Complete a technical assessment of the petroleum potential of the basin/area.
  2. Define the key plays, petroleum systems, leads/ prospects, and risks.
  3. Recommend future exploration activity based on prevailing technical and economic conditions.

The winning Canadian team goes on to compete in Denver at the Global Competition associated with AAPG’s annual meeting, with hopes of placing in the top! Over the past several years the Canada Regional winning teams have gone on to finish fourth, third, and second in the Global Competition.

This year we have teams coming to Calgary from:

  • University of Calgary (Calgary, AB)
  • University of Alberta (Edmonton, AB)
  • McMaster University (Hamilton, ON)
  • Queen’s University (Kingston, ON)
  • University of Western Ontario (London, ON)
  • Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS)
  • Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John’s, NL)

Canada’s big challenge is getting all teams together in Calgary and airfares are a big expense. We are looking for sponsorship to help get our Canadian teams together in Calgary for our Regional Competition. Sponsors will all be acknowledged at the Regional competition and are welcome to partake in many of the IBA events such as: attending the Regional event, viewing some or all of the student presentations, plus sponsor companies are also offered judging positions.

Each student puts in over 200 hours of work for their presentations, finding the program to be an eye-opening introduction to the petroleum industry. This is an excellent recruitment opportunity for sponsor companies to meet top level students and many past participants are now geoscientists at our sponsoring companies.

Please visit http://www.aapg.org/iba/sponsorship.cfm to make a donation. For more information, please contact Matthew Drew, Canada Region IBA Committee Member (Matthew.C.Drew@gmail.com).

SAVE THE DATE: GeoSkills 2015

This event will gather speakers, students and professionals together for a day of seminars, networking, and learning about the tools to succeed in the profession. It will include an evening mixer, where attendees can enjoy food and converse with fellow professionals and students. All professional geoscientists and geoscience students are welcome to attend.

Registration will open December 2014. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Please visit apega.ca/events/geoskills.html for more information.
