Happy April Everyone! So the “Back to Exploration: 2008 C3Geo Convention” is right around the corner from May 12- 15th at the Roundup Centre in Calgary. Just looking at the schedule of events, there are a LOT of opportunities for interaction and networking with our fellow CSEG members (and CSPG/CWLS too). In addition to the Icebreaker, Beer & Bull and the Core Meltdown (always entertaining), there is also an opportunity for newcomers to network and impress the more experienced members at the “Student/Industry Gala & Challenge Bowl”. Hopefully you will find the time to attend some of these events in addition to the technical sessions.

CSEG Outreach Committee

“100 jobs for 100 Students”

The CSEG Outreach committee has recently joined the CSPG Outreach committee in “The 100 Student Jobs Initiative”. With the rapidly aging Geophysical and Geological workforce in the petroleum industry, the CSEG and the CSPG need to be proactive in getting young blood into our profession while there are still mentors around to train them.

The goals of the committee are 1) to help students from across Canada get that all important first summer job and hopefully subsequent summer and full time jobs; 2) to give employers an easy conduit for finding summer students from across Canada without having to travel from University to University through all ten provinces; and 3) to promote the CSEG and CSPG and their activities to both undergraduate and graduate programs across Canada, thus raising the awareness of students about the pending shortage of Geoscientists currently and in the coming years. This will hopefully lead to higher student enrollment in the CSEG/CSPG membership as well.

The “100 Summer Student Jobs Initiative” wants to simplify the search for student help. I hear it all the time from managers that they are interested in hiring summer students but they don’t have the time to try to solicit resumes from schools across the country or they just send their posting to the U of C or U of A. We will again provide a wide selection of students (from 1st years to 4th years) and graduates for employers to quickly scan through and within 15-20 minutes have a selection of resumes from across Canada to start their interview process.

So if you are a student or recent graduate looking for a job, please visit the CSEG/CSPG websites and post your information. If you are an employer please contact Carmen Swalwell at carmen.swalwell@shaw.ca or at (403) 560-8431.

Women in Seismic – Golf Tournament

The 8th annual Women in Seismic (WiSE) golf tournament is coming soon! The 2008 tournament will be held on Monday, August 25th, 2008 at the Fox Hollow golf course in Calgary. This event is an excellent opportunity for networking amongst your peers in a fun environment, while supporting a great cause!

As in previous years, we will be raising money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation (Ovarian and Breast). We have had tremendous support from the industry in previous years, and are actively soliciting support for this year’s tournament for hole sponsorship, raffle/silent auction items and team prizes. As in the past, the entire cost of sponsoring a hole and all proceeds from the raffle/silent auction are given directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation! Last year alone, with your help, we raised over $16,000 for this great cause!

If you would like information on hole sponsorship, or if your company would like to donate raffle/auction items or team prizes for the tournament, please contact Danielle Harrison at danielle.harrison@divescto.com or (403)770-0359. Entry forms for the tournament will be available shortly. Thank you to everyone for your continued support!

CSEG/CSPG/CWLS Silent Auction

As part of the CSEG, CSPG and CWLS Convention and our commitment to our community, we will be holding our fifth annual charity event and silent auction on Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 from 4 pm until 6 pm on the Exhibit Floor at the Roundup Centre in Calgary. When you are wandering around the exhibits on the Monday and Tuesday, please take a look at our auction, and possibly make a bid. To date, with your help, we have raised over $52,000 with our silent and live auctions!

This year the proceeds will once again be going to Light Up the World (www.lutw.org), which was founded in Calgary. LUTW is a Canadian humanitarian initiative whose chief goal is to assist the poor in the developing world to obtain affordable, safe, and environmentally friendly White Light Emitting Diode (WLED) based home lighting powered by renewable energy sources.

We are still actively soliciting items for this event. We invite you and your company to be a part of this worthy cause by generously contributing products or services for the silent auction. If you can help out with a donation please contact Laurie Ross at (403) 298-5614. Your support is greatly appreciated. See you at the Convention!

Junior Geophysicists Forum

NEW DATE FOR JUNIOR GEOPHYSICISTS FORUM!

Last month we told you that the next JGF will be held May 7, 2008. We have rescheduled the next JGF for JUNE 18, 2008. Please mark that in your calendars. More information will be available on the CSEG website. You can also email the JGF committee at jgf@cseg.ca We remind you that this event is for ALL geophysicists (junior, intermediate and senior), as well as students enrolled in a geophysics degree program. Due to space limitations, we regret that the event is limited to geophysicists and students only. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the Chair of the JGF, Carmen Swalwell at (403) 560-8431 or carmen.swalwell@shaw.ca.

For students and geophysicists new to the industry, this is a must attend event. You will not have another chance to network with approximately 200 geophysicists until the next JGF in 2009. Intermediate and senior geophysicists volunteer to attend and network with the up and coming geophysicists to help give them additional exposure and insight into the industry. Do not miss this opportunity!

We would like to thank our sponsors Apache Canada Ltd, Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Compton Petroleum Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Petro-Canada, Suncor Energy Inc. and Talisman Energy Inc.
